Cruise Ship Accident Attorneys Cruise Injury & Death Lawyers

cruise ship accident lawyer

Unlike laws on land, maritime law has its own set of rules and regulations and can be quite different. For example, the standards for liability and the types of damages one can claim may vary under maritime law. It also has specific provisions for worker’s rights, environmental regulations, and ship ownership, which can all be relevant in the aftermath of a cruise ship accident. In the aftermath of a cruise ship accident, passengers face a myriad of challenges, from medical concerns to legal complexities. Understanding the types of injuries commonly sustained can help in taking preventative measures.

Cruise Ship Injuries Due to Weather

Legal intricacies often arise when someone faces harm on a cruise ship, making it completely different than standard injury claims. Whether a cruise ship accident involves a crew member or a passenger, maritime law governs these situations. Its complexities make it a challenging area for general personal injury attorneys. It's advisable to engage an attorney well-versed in cruise ship accidents who understands the ins and outs of this specific legal arena.

Cruise lines are responsible for the injuries that passengers sustain on and off the ship. Florida law is clear that cruise lines have a non-delegable responsibility to make sure that passengers are safe when being transported between the ship and shore. I was in a jet ski accident that led to an urgent need for emergency surgery, my life took a turn. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, my parents and family knew I needed a legal advocate to navigate the road ahead.

They're called fish extenders, and they're used by a network of families who have packed small gifts, treats, and trinkets to exchange with each other throughout their trip. To get in on the fun for your next sailing, visit the DisBoards Cruise Meets forum or CruiseCritic's Roll Calls. Many times, there are Facebook groups for your exact sailing as well. This can be particularly helpful with shy kids as they can get acquainted with other cruise-goers their age ahead of their journey.

This club does not utilize parent sign-in and -out, so you need to trust your kid if they are coming to Edge. If your 10-to-12-year-old child visits Edge, they can also play at the Oceaneer Lab and Oceaneer Club, so they have options. Technically, Edge is for kids ages 11-14, but you can get your 10-year-old in with permission — and once they figure that out, it's probably all over for the "little kid club." These lines can get long, so I recommend riding first thing when you board if the port is warm enough.

All of Disney Cruise Line's ships have some kind of waterslide on board. If you happen to be at sea when a new Disney movie premieres on land, you'll also get that same first look at sea. The exact bars will vary by vessel, but you can expect spots like a wine and Champagne bar, a pub, a laid-back lounge and a bar with live entertainment. These reservations are hard to get, especially for brunch, so you'll want to make them the second you are eligible and keep checking back for cancellations if you miss out the first time. Be prepared for sticker shock, though, as these suites will almost certainly be near or over five figures on many sailings.

About Disney Cruises

There is supervision, of course, and Disney Cruise Line's famously fun activities, but it's practically a private resort for high schoolers to chill in all day and night — no parents allowed. If you’re a frequent Disney cruiser, you’re probably familiar with the line’s free-flowing soft-serve ice cream. And if the craving strikes when visiting Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, you’ll be glad to know it’s also available on the island for the ultimate sugar rush in the sun. This is especially important if character meet-and-greets are a priority for you.

Meet the Expert

There's plenty that sets Disney Cruise Line apart from its competitors — and not just the endless soft-serve ice cream, family-friendly staterooms, or being able to hug Mickey Mouse on your way to a Disney princess-themed restaurant. All five Disney cruise ships are elegantly designed and provide high-end services. With the best activities to keep kids entertained throughout the day, along with relaxing escapes for adults, Disney cruises offer plenty for the entire family. From immersive dining adventures to Disney's first-ever attraction at sea, these ships present truly magical vacations that visit a number of exciting destinations. Disney Cruise Line's ports of call include places in Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, and, of course, Disney's private Bahamian island, Castaway Cay. And depending on when you cruise, you may be able to pick from themed itineraries for Halloween and Christmas.

Add an Adventures by Disney trip to your vacation.

You also have your own check-in area at the port and are among the first to board the ship, which can mean extra time to enjoy having the waterslides to yourself. At the end of the cruise, you can have a private elevator that takes you down to be some of the first off the ship — which should protect you from a long line to say goodbye. Disney Cruise Line has about 370 annual departures scheduled that range from two- to 15-night sailings. Many new-to-Disney itineraries have recently become available as the line is adding new ships for the first time in a decade. Disney Wish is currently a workhorse of short three- and four-night sailings from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Bahamas, home to Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. Instead, you’ll either pay per drink or purchase bundled quantities onboard.

Teens can hang out in the coolest part of the ship.

“The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app will list character appearance times and locations so that you can be sure to catch your favorite Disney characters on board,” Hwang adds. As with the waterslides, we recommend enjoying these first thing when you board if you want to try them without crowds. Otherwise, you won't find so many people in the pools on port days, early in the morning and right before dinner. There are thousands of people on the ship and only a few small pools, so plan accordingly. Just like on board, some of the food on Castaway is included, while alcohol and specialty drinks are not.

In the past, Disney Cruise Line required that you be vaccinated or tested for COVID-19 before sailing, but this is no longer the case. Guests departing from the United States are not required to do either, though the cruise line highly encourages you to get vaccinated before sailing. The cheapest rate we found — the previously-mentioned $1,958 — is for a cruise in late January, a time when those with school-aged children might have trouble getting away. Meanwhile, the most expensive period for this cruise takes place over the Christmas holiday and rings in at $3,737 for an inside stateroom. Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us.

Disney Cruise Line cabins and suites

Enchante on Disney Wish is similar — you're dressing up for these meals. At the top of the "costs extra" list are the restaurants Palo (found on all five ships, though it's Palo Steakhouse on Disney Wish), Remy (on Dream and Fantasy) and Enchante (only on Disney Wish). A pro-level hack is to get Mickey churro waffles from the buffet in the morning (only available some mornings) and add vanilla ice cream for a vacation-worthy breakfast. And you haven't lived until your kids learn how to call and order free Mickey ice cream bars to the cabin ... You must choose between an early and a late dinner time, with your showtime opposite your dining time.

For all destinations, if you’d like to save money, avoid peak periods and search all available dates to find the lowest rates. This is true even on less popular cruises, such as those sailing up to Alaska. The news comes after two other Disney Cruise Line crew members were arrested on child pornography charges in January. A cruise ship dancer was arrested on similar charges earlier this month, but law enforcement did not specify what ship he was working on.

Cabins on Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy are equipped with a combination of 110- and 220-volt (European) outlets. Guests wishing to consume wine or Champagne that they have brought on board in one of the dining rooms will be charged a corkage fee of $26 per bottle. If you are on a ship that still charges by the amount of data used, we recommend not doing that and connecting either when you are in port or via a plan from your cellphone provider. Disney Cruise Line's Wi-Fi, Connect@Sea, is in the process of being upgraded, so speed, bandwidth and cost vary by ship. While room service is free, it's customary to add a few dollars of tip when you sign the "bill."

While Disney may be a household name, Disney Cruise Line is actually a small line. It currently sails just five ships, compared to 27 at its family-friendly competitor Royal Caribbean. After decades of success making families smile and laugh at its theme parks, Disney dipped its toes into the world of cruising in 1998. Disney didn't just copy another cruise line's model for success or slap its name on the side of an existing ship. Casual meals can be had at Cabanas or ordered via 24-hour room service on board the Disney Magic. Otherwise, stop by Duck-In Diner for hot dogs, chicken fingers, or a shawarma sandwich or enjoy a quick lunch at Pinocchio’s Pizzeria.

You can even book your next cruise while on board to save even more. Whether you are on a three-night trip to Castaway Cay or a bigger crossing to the South Pacific, a Disney cruise is a special vacation that actually feels like a vacation. Those sorts of prices will only be available during the offseason, such as in mid-to-late January and early February or for repositioning cruises as the ship moves from, say, Puerto Rico to Florida. That same cruise during spring break can cost double or more, so the more date flexibility you have, the better. For a family of four, the cheapest Disney cruise currently available (not counting the two-night cruises in Australia and New Zealand) is about $2,500. An ocean view will add about $90 and a verandah will add about $500.

Experience global cities through expertly curated itineraries in Barcelona, Paris, Rome, and beyond. It’s a multi-sensory experience in this immersive, interactive venue, and you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled in case anyone orders the $5,000 Kaiburr Crystal cocktail. When available, cruisers may be able to snag an affordable last-minute room upgrade at the port, saving hundreds on a higher-tier room. The currency on Disney Cruise Line ships, regardless of location, is the U.S. dollar. All cabins are equipped with multiple 110-volt outlets, which are standard in the U.S. and Canada.

Atlas Ocean Voyages World Navigator Cruise Ship Review

That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process, trust us — we recommend that you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. There's a wide selection of included beers on World Navigator as well as a number of included wines. There's also an extensive list of extra charge wines available by the bottle. Atlas Ocean Voyages operates international, multi-country itineraries where passports always are required. In keeping with the rules in place in many countries around the world, passports should be valid for at least six months after the end date of your trip and have sufficient blank pages for entry stamps. Note that it is important that the name on your reservation be exactly as it is stated on your passport.

Atlas Ocean Voyages Observation Lounge

That seemed fine with most guests, who kept busy in port during the day and then socialized across tables at dinner or in the lovely Dome lounge at night. The poor execution of the event came as a surprise to passengers who had been on the previous sailings, however. I was shown pictures of a wine tasting in a lovely Spanish restaurant and heard tales of a French wine tasting that was lots of fun. The standout is the ship itself, with its cutting-edge design aimed to have a minimal ecological footprint—all the more important in remote ecosystems like this one. My partner and I were the first passengers on the ship and were checked in in the super comfortable Atlas Lounge with cocktails and canapés in hand. In just five minutes, we were done and directed to our cabin, which was ready for us.

And they'll all be what is known as expedition ships -- vessels built extra tough to travel to some of the most off-the-beaten-path parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic. Created by a company that's already big in river cruising and operates ocean ships for other brands, Atlas initially will focus heavily on voyages to the ultimate playgrounds for small expedition ships, Antarctica and the Arctic. It'll also offer a sprinkling of trips along the east coast of South America and in the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea too. As with many expedition cruises, the activities on World Traveller largely revolve around the expedition staff's lectures, which I found extremely engaging on my voyage. Most guests were traveling as couples for the Antarctica expedition, but there were quite a few single passengers, and they got on well with solo travelers and other guests on the ship.

How much does an Atlas Ocean Voyages cruise cost?

This northern town situated in the Arctic Circle offers a glimpse into a colder but beautiful way of life where polar bears roam and the average summer temperature doesn’t even get into the 50s. Explore the Canary Islands with a cruise to their most populous city, Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria Island. These Spanish islands have one of the best climates in the world, perfect for your next cruise vacation. Learn about cruising with children on Atlas Ocean Voyages and about onboard programs designed with the whole family in mind.

The same goes for the food — there are no specialty restaurants for which you need to fork out extra dollars. The extensive menu in the dining room changes every day, and you can have as much as you’d like. Atlas Ocean Voyages is a luxury and adventure-focused cruise line that launched in August 2021. They currently operate only two ships, World Navigator and World Traveller, both of which accommodate no more than 196 passengers and just as many crew. Built for adventurous travel to faraway places such as Antarctica and the Arctic, it's a small and intimate ship at a time when small and intimate is what many luxury travelers are craving most. Passengers on initial sailings of World Navigator this year have gotten just 150 to 250 megabytes of data on a complimentary basis per sailing, depending on their cabin category.

Photo Gallery for Atlas Ocean Voyages Cruises

There also are emergency call buttons next to the beds that aren't found in the rest of the ship's cabins. World Navigator has standard North American-style, 120-volt outlets in rooms as well as European-style, 230-volt outlets and USB ports. Better yet, doors on each side of the Dome observation lounge lead to outdoor viewing areas that also wrap around three sides of the ship. World Navigator, notably, also is loaded with indoor and outdoor observation areas -- something that can make all the difference during a trip to a place like Antarctica. World Navigator currently is sailing with six Zodiac boats on board for landings and soon will add six more in advance of its repositioning to Antarctica for the winter. Bathrooms in all categories of World Navigator cabins are lined with marble and feature upscale L'Occitane toiletries.

As is typical for expedition ships, there are no truly giant suites on World Navigator of the sort found on some traditional luxury ships such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Seven Seas Splendor (where a single suite measures more than 4,000 square feet). Giant suites like that typically only are found on vessels much larger than World Navigator. Neither of those lines go to the polar regions and so their ships are better suited for warm weather destinations, with more areas to spread out and sunbathe.

Thanks to its small yacht-style ships, it can make its way to remote areas that other vessels can’t access. If you’re keen to take a comfortable vacation but still want to get off the tourist track, you’ll get exactly what you’re looking for with Atlas Ocean Voyages. Atlas Ocean Voyages attracts experienced traveler who expects impeccable service, enjoys an elegant yet relaxed ambiance and embraces the cultures of the destinations they visit yet is seeking something new when it comes to cruising. Atlas attracts passengers from premium cruise lines who desire a more personalized, intimate experience at a high value, as well as passengers from luxury cruise lines who are looking for a new type of cruise experience to bucket-list destinations.

Intimate Yachts

From the Magellanic woodpeckers of the forests to the penguin colony of Martillo Island, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers nature lovers a delightful slice of Patagonia wildlife. The region is home to at least 50 bird species, including the austral parakeet and Andean condor. Mammals such as the guanaco, red foxes, muskrat and even small South American camel have been seen wandering the landscapes of the park. Casablanca is more than just an old movie; this city offers travelers a look into modern day Morocco with mosques, shopping malls and skyscrapers.

There are two guest elevators available should you wish to avoid taking the stairs. When it's time to head off the ship, you'll find lockers equipped with cold-weather gear for the polar regions – or snorkeling equipment in warm destinations – and the boarding areas for the Zodiacs. In keeping with the line's commitment to conscious navigation, guests will also find a Vero water station on Deck 4 where water aluminum bottles can be refilled that are supplied to each guest for the expedition.

Like Sylvia Earle and Ocean Victory, the ship is among a new breed of small expedition ships that combine all the benefits of more traditional small ship polar adventures with relaxed luxury. Learn about the entertainment that will fill your evenings onboard the luxury cruise ships from Atlas Ocean Voyages. Enjoy a sneak peak at the best cuisine offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages onboard their all-inclusive luxury cruise ships.

The wine selection was largely Portuguese on my sailing, and I would've appreciated a bit more variety—such as wines from Argentina, where we embarked. Perhaps because this was an inaugural sailing and the ship had sailed to Argentina from Portugal (Atlas' parent company, Mystic Cruises, has a Portuguese owner), there wasn't yet time for a new delivery of local wines. The latter are the sort of balcony cabins found on the newest Celebrity Cruises ships and vessels operated by several river cruise lines including Avalon Waterways and Crystal Cruises.

Atlas has put together an impressive expedition team—PHDs, polar meteorologists, and lifelong adventure guides with hundreds of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions among them. In their capable hands, the excursions through choppy weather and to remote stretches of coastline were seamless and fascinating, and time and time again other guests agreed that this expedition team was a highlight that sets them apart from others. But the rest of the crew was also wonderful; warm, friendly, and remembering your preferences before you’ve even had a chance to form them. Like most ships its size, onboard entertainment and dining options are limited, but the ship has more than ample comfortable public spaces with large windows from which to take in the views. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site.

Even the ship's initial Greek Islands itinerary is ending with an unusual twist. Instead of returning to Piraeus (the port for Athens) after visiting such islands as Patmos, Mykonos and Santorini, the vessel will spend the last two nights of the nine-night voyage in Alexandria, Egypt. The line's base fares include round-trip airfare from select U.S. and Canadian gateways; drinks, including spirits and fine wines; shipboard Wi-Fi; prepaid gratuities; and (perhaps most notably) shore excursions in every port.
